September DIY and Business Book Club 2016

September DIY and business book club from Dear Handmade Life

I’m working with my dad right now as he remodels and readies a rental home for new tenants.  It’s hard work, lots of physical labor, but I really enjoy it.  Ripping out carpet, and getting new paint on the walls is always such a great feeling and  a quick transformation to an old home.  When we were pulling up the carpet in the dining room, we found hardwood surrounding a plywood in-layed floor.  I tried convincing him to paint the plywood with some high gloss paint and a stencil, but he sort of looked at me, and shook his head and silently grit his teeth.  He’s funny like that.

I’ve been loving the look of plywood floors lately.  The wood grain in plywood is really neat when its highlighted with stain, or even a dry brushed paint.  Makes me kinda wish that we had a reason to do it in our house! Cue the husband walking away with his hands over his ears so he doesn’t have to do another home improvement project.

Our books this month are *sort of* fueling my love for plywood projects.  We’ve got four awesome books this month.

  1.  Wreck this Journal
  2. How to Knit
  3. Crochet One Skein Wonders
  4. Ply Design

  1. My favorite use of ply wood? That is a hard one. We use it for so many things. I can tell you something that I was thankful for having some ply wood on hand for. Does that count? A few years ago my son broke his ankle and we need to build a platform widening the steps from his bedroom to the bathroom so he could get into the bathroom.

  2. The plywood floor idea sounds cool 🙂 I have never actually thought about using plywood creatively other than doll house making when I was younger.

  3. I recently visited a restaurant where the entire bathroom – floors, walls, stalls – were all a lightly varnished golden plywood. So modern but so warm!

  4. I’ve actually never done anything with plywood but I just looked up the plywood bench and that would be so awesome. A whole other medium to play with
