10 Items to Spark Organizational Joy in Your Home Office
Editor’s Note: If you’ve been to our Craftcation: Business & Makers Conference, then you probably already know (and love) our friends at Darice who have been our official craft supply sponsor for the conference for the past four years! If you don’t know about Darice yet and you’re a craft blogger or handmade business owner, you REALLY need to be buying your supplies wholesale and should consider setting up a wholesale account with a company like Darice. Darice caters to small business owners and makers with low minimums and a freight-included program. Plus they just started carrying fabric! Your profit margin will never be high enough if you’re paying retail for supplies. If you’re not ready to start buying wholesale, at least make sure you’re getting the best retail price possible. Darice has a sister business Consumer Crafts that has excellent prices. For more on how to price your products, check out this post. We’re usually talking about all the great craft supplies Darice has but we invited our friend Meighan O’Toole to the blog to share some of her favorite organization and decor items from Darice.-Nicole S.
It’s starting to feel like that time of year, where we’re all just a little bit over winter and getting wistful for warmer, brighter days. I don’t know about you, but with the dawning of spring comes me wanting to open all the windows, get some serious air in my home, and clean house.
Unless you live under a rock, you may have noticed that there’s been a whole lot of figuring out what sparks joy with one’s things due to a certain Netflix series starring a seemingly otherworldly Japanese sprite by the name of Marie Kondo. In her show Tidying Up with Marie Kondo, she shares her method to organize and clean one’s home. She asks her participants to figure out what sparks joy amongst their things and to get rid of everything that does not.
With all that joy sparking comes a whole lot of organization happening as well. And Kondo suggests that you use boxes and containers to organize what you’ve kept.
With this in mind, we thought we’d share with you our 10 favorite organizational items from our friends at Darice (they’re also our official craft supply sponsor for Craftcation Conference 2019!).
Sparking Joy in Your Home Office
I’ll be honest with you, I’ve never KonMari-ed anything in my home (that’s the term people use to employ Kondo’s method of cleaning and organizing). But, I have known plenty of people that have, and I’m of the Type A variety that loves a little procrastination organization. It’s a great way to start fresh and feel new again.
As creative small business owners, it’s important to work in surroundings that we love and keep us inspired. That means creating a home office we love to work in as well. So Kon-mari or not, tidying up doesn’t have to be an all day affair. But it is a great place to begin by getting ready for spring.
I’ve spent all winter hunkering down creating content, growing my business, and working with clients. Whether or not I’ll go the full KonMari gamut, I’m not sure but I do know that it’s time to to get rid of things I no longer use, clean shop, and add some joy to my workspace. Maybe you feel the same?
Getting Started with Darice
Our partner Darice, is our go-to for art and craft supplies but they also have a wide selection of all types of products online. We thought they were the perfect place to choose items you can use in your office.
In order to shop there, you’ll need to create a new account. No worries though, it’s totally easy to do and you don’t have to supply a credit card to do so. You can browse their online catalog without an account but you won’t be able to see the pricing, and you won’t be able to shop.
To become a member, head over to their account creation section and create a username and password, enter your billing and shipping addresses, and company information. They will ask for a tax ID#, but if you don’t have one simply click “no” and they’ll give you the option to sign up without one. I don’t have one and signed up easily.
Super simple.
Pro-Tip: Darice is famous for great sales and discounts, so be sure to take advantage of their 10% off discount when you sign up! A window will appear when you enter the site.
Our Top 10 Picks for Sparking Joy in Your Home Office
Organizing and cleaning up your office can take time, but it doesn’t have to be a drag. Especially with these organizational items we’ve chosen for you!
Every object below is aimed at bringing joy and inspiration to your newly cleaned and organized workspace. They’ll bring color, life, and fun to one of the most important places you spend time in.
Darice Metal Rolling Utility Cart: This has to be one of my top picks. Everyone needs one of these carts in their home. They come in a variety of different colors, sure to compliment anyone’s home. Plus they’re perfect for keeping by your desk or rolling out of sight if you have company or are recording a video. There are three different sections giving you a whole bunch of room to get organized!
Metal Cart Wood Cover: OK, if you get the above you’re absolutely going to need to get this beautiful wood cover to give your roller cart a nice finished look. A plus if the top is just a wee bit messy – it’s definitely going to spark some joy! You will need to purchase two, but that’s just an excuse to get two carts. Plus they come in two colors: natural or white.
Wooden Pegboard Kit: I love the idea of taking an afternoon to paint and put together this Wooden pegboard kit of three! What a perfect way to bring some beauty and organization into your office. Those key pegs are perfect, never wonder where your keys are again! They also offer a variety of other sizes and shapes and accessories to mix and match.
Potted Cactus: Yes, these are definitely not an organizational item – but every office needs life form beyond you! And small, low maintenance plants are where it’s at. These little greenies will not only spark joy but add a sense of beauty and calmness to your room. And you can put them on the above pegboard kits!
Triple Pot Hanging Planter: Alright, now I’m on a bit of a plant kick, but these lovely hanging planters can double for pen and tool holders as well. They don’t have to be just for plants. Just be sure to but something soft in the bottom so if you are putting metal tools in them they don’t crack. (They are ceramic.) I love the smoothness of the white ceramic and the rustic, boho feel of the leather. They’ll add a nice touch to any room, and they would look lovely above a desk or on a door! They also offer a singular hanging planter too!
I SPY DIY™ Patterned Ceramic Canister Set with Cork Lids: Speaking of pen and tool holders, these happy ceramic containers from I SPY DIY™ would make a colorful addition to any desk, table, or bookcase. Use them to store pens and tools or keep them closed and store paperclips, washi tape, etc. That cork is a nice touch, it might be imperative to show that off!
I SPY DIY™ Clear Acrylic Catch All Triangle Tray with Black Pattern If you love the look of the I SPY DIY™ vibe, check out these fun catch-all acrylic trays. While I try and keep my home office pretty clean, I always find odds and ends floating around like my earbuds, my glasses, hair ties, etc. These slick trays are perfect to catch all of those things you need but don’t necessarily want to put away.
Ministorage: We’ve all got things we need, but don’t necessarily want them out at all times. Use these colorful storage boxes that stack neatly on top of each other for office supplies like paperclips, washi tape, stickers, pens, etc. Easily accessible but neatly organized and out of site!
Rainbow rolling cart: This might be the pièce de résistance of this whole list. Would you look at those colors! Not only is this 10 drawer rolling cart bright and fun but it’s versatile and super easy to organize papers, tools, supplies, and more. Darice requires that you buy two, but that might just be exactly what you need to pull the room together, or perhaps the second one can be a gift to your business bestie?
Mason Jars with Chalkboard Labels: If you have a hankering to get a little crafty with your organization, might I suggest these mason jars with chalkboard labels? Paint the jars and or the tops to match your office, and use the chalkboard labels to list what’s in your new fun containers.
Sparking Joy is a State of Mind
I hope this list gave you a jolt of inspiration to get organized and dive into a little spring cleaning. I know I’m thinking of new ways to set up my home office.
What’s fun about this list is you don’t need everything on it, you can choose one item or just use it as a way to get inspired by what you already own. Just like Marie Kondo say’s it’s up to you to decide what sparks joy in your life. There are no rules. Sparking joy is a state of mind and it’s up to you to define it.
