Learn the basics of a vintage Nordic craft as designer and maker Robert Mahar guides you through the creation and construction of a minimal, modern himmeli mobile. Originating in Finland as a traditional holiday decoration created from natural wheat or rye straw, you’ll be making an updated version in monochromatic, modern materials, optionally ornamented with elegant tassels.

Each participant will learn techniques, tips and tricks to successfully create their own modern himmeli mobile and decorative tassels. All tools and materials will be happily provided to begin your mobile along with extra goodies to continue crafting at home.

Commemorate Craftcation 2016 with a souvenir sampler inspired by the saturated palette of vintage California travel postcards and custom printed onto cotton linen fabric which you’ll embellish with hand embroidery. Designer and maker Robert Mahar will show you back stitch along the beach, split stitch a special message and even get a little fancy with a pekinese stitch around the Ventura pier. This free form, modern take take on traditional sampler is a fun introduction to traditional needlework.

Perfectly suited for both beginners as well as advanced participants – instruction will cover basic to more intricate embroidery stitches. All materials (fabric, embroidery floss, hoops and needles!) along with instructional diagrams are happily provided to begin your sampler during the workshop and continue stitching at home.

This is Part 1 of a two part class – you must attend both sessions to complete this project.

Learn to sew a classic 1950’s style circle skirt! Perfect for an advanced beginner or intermediate sewer, in this class we will learn to cut the skirt pieces, sew and finish straight seams, work with interfacing, sew an invisible zipper, topstitch a narrow curved hem, and sew a traditional fully lined waistband by understitching and stitching in the ditch. Don’t know what all those terms mean? No worries! You will know after taking this workshop! And all these wonderful skills can be applied to your future garments! This class is ideal for those that have already made a garment or two in the past, or have taken Christine’s Craftcation workshops in the past. Not suitable for the absolute beginner.

Please note: the pattern is sized by the waist measurement and fits waist sizes 23-37″ only. If you fall out of this size range and want to take the class, please bring the measurements of someone else to make the skirt for, as there will not be time in class to draft a new pattern at a different size. Thanks for understanding!

Fabric for this workshop is provided by Cotton + Steel. Students will be able to choose from a selection of their fun quilt weight cotton prints.

No camera experience necessary, just a desire to learn and have fun. You will leave knowing how to use your phone camera and an added confidence in photo taking. We will be taking a photo walk outside so please dress comfortably for the weather.

In this class, we will explore carving simple blocks and printing our designs on fabric. No previous printmaking experience or drawing skills are required to create beautiful, interesting prints.

You will leave with several simple product photos that you can use right away in your shop, on social media and as an added enhancement to product orders.

In this workshop we’ll cover an array of methods to personalize your blocks, whether you like the traditional light-and-dark blocks that reflect outward from a small center, a modern approach with an oversized center square, wonky and angled piecing, or your own take on this venerable quilting pattern. This class is perfect for beginning sewists/quilters and more experienced alike.

Learn how to make sweet little hand-bound books out of sugar packets! Then write fun tid bits inside them and leave them around town for strangers to stumble upon at cafe’s and coffee shops. Whoever finds them can then add their own notes to the pages, and re-hide them for the next person! Sugar books are a delightful little intervention–an unexpected chance to share little stories and kind words. In this workshop, we’ll cut paper to size, punch holes, and learn a simple Japanese stab binding stitch. You’ll get to make at least one full set of 4 books, and as many extras as time permits!
