PODCAST 122: Building an Engaged Audience with Nica Tanaka

I can’t be the only one out there who despite knowing that it’s NOT all about the numbers (it’s about engagement, right?!) still has moments when she looks longingly at social accounts with what seems like a billion followers and thinks:

  • Geez, they must have it so easy OR
  • How EXACTLY did they get so many followers? OR
  • They must be living on easy street

Let’s step back for a moment from those thoughts and remind ourselves that OUR WORTH IS NOT OUR WORK and our enough-ness isn’t based on how many followers we have.

Your number of followers doesn’t directly correlate with your business success but what does is the community you build around your business.

Here at DHL, we’re all about community. It’s the heart of everything we do and always has been. We’ve been in business since before social media existed and we learned how to build community the old fashioned way – in person and via word of mouth. Now, we work hard to translate that same in-person connection that DHL was built on to the online world. We are all about community over your follower count. But, letting go of those vanity metrics can be hard.

I invited Nica Tanaka to our podcast to encourage us to focus on building an engaged audience through being yourself and stop putting so much weight on numbers. She found a community that roots for her and today she’s here to share her secrets to help you build a special relationship with your audience too.
