Podcast Episode 79: Legally Protecting Your Business with Christina Scalera

Legally Protecting Your Business with Christina Scalera Dear Handmade Life

Today on the Dear Handmade Life podcast we’re talking to Christina Scalera, the attorney and founder behind The Contract Shop, a contract template store for creative entrepreneurs, wedding professionals, and coaches about legally protecting your business. I chat with Christina about how getting your legal ducks in a row can increase productivity, when you need a contract, the two basic types of insurance every business (no matter how small) needs, the GDPR, the most important legal and financial things you need to have in place when you start your business and more.

Some things we mention in this episode:
Christina’s The Contract Shop Quiz
Amy Porterfield’s podcast episode about the GDPR
Our makers and business conference Craftcation Conference – FYI: discounted early bird registration ends 12.1.18!

This episode is sponsored by Amazon Handmade. When I started my handmade business over a decade ago, selling options were extremely limited. We had craft shows, wholesale sales, online sales through your own website and that was pretty much it. Now, makers have lots of online and in-person selling avenues. You may feel overwhelmed thinking about dividing your efforts to sell on a new platform but there are so many reasons why diversifying your sales avenues can create longevity for your business. And, Amazon Handmade is a great platform to consider. To be honest, I hadn’t thought about selling our new line of tees and pins on Amazon Handmade until we were recording the commercial for this episode of our podcast and I learned that there were zero upfront costs and no monthly fees to get our products in front of Amazon’s 250 million customers worldwide! Sure, it takes a bit of time to set up a new online shop but if you already have the basics in place (photos, product descriptions etc.) like we do, it’s pretty quick and the makers I know who have Amazon Handmade shops say the maintenance is low compared to their sales – creating a high ROI. One of our goals for 2019 is to set up our own Amazon Handmade shop. If you’re interested too, you can learn more here.
