If you would have told me ten years ago that it wa If you would have told me ten years ago that it was possible to make the same kind of intimate connections that you can make in person in the online world, I would have given you one of my classic, ummm… hmmmm looks.

How can a video chat compare to a chance meeting in the elevator at a conference that turns into staying up too late swapping life stories in the hotel bar? Or striking up a conversation with that other person with the same purple hair as you only to find out you had a bajillion things in common? We are social beings. (Even us introverts.) We need camaraderie, acceptance, eye contact. It’s part of the fabric of connection.

With our Camp Dear Handmade Life around the corner, I wanted to share some tips for you to make meaningful connections at virtual events, in the online space and even at in-person events.

While we do everything we can to help you grow your community at Camp DHL, we can’t do EVERYTHING, so tune in to our podcast today and get my advice to get you from ”what if there’s an awkward moment?” to “I can’t believe we just met, I feel like we’ve been friends forever” that you can use at Camp DHL and beyond!

Listen on your favorite podcast app or by clicking the link in our bio.

P.S. - This 📷is from our Craftcation Conference where I've made some of the most meaningful connections with creatives. Can't wait to be back at the beach in Ventura in 2022 at Craftcation but in the meantime, I'm so excited to meet and make memories with our Camp DHL campers this summer.

So, when I saw this photo of #Craftcation alum Blaire aka @freshlyfuji in our Make All the Things tee on her birthday looking simultaneously like a total badass and adorable (hello! those 🍒 earrings) I immediately wanted to do a whole tough, hot and crafty photoshoot.

Any of my local crafty business badass ladies want to get together with our cameras and props and have a shoot?

The other day I put my son Luca in his carseat and The other day I put my son Luca in his carseat and he looked up and got the biggest smile on his face.

I realized that Luca was looking at himself in the baby seat mirror that we have hooked on the back of the headrest. You should have seen this look that he was giving himself. It was like he was straight up in love.
And he is.
And, he should be.

It made me think about all the things that happen in our lives between our one-year-old selves that look in the mirror as if they’re staring into the eyes of their soulmate and our 15-year-old selves that see all the ways they’re different that they wish were the same or our 20 or 30 or 40-something-year-old selves that look in the mirror and see the wrinkles and the gray hairs sprouting up.

How can we get back a little of that confident self-love from our childhood?

One thing I've found that helps is to really know myself and move towards the things that bring me joy and help me share my unique gifts with the world. A part of that is embracing my own personal style.

I chatted with painter and sewist, @KatieKortman who's an expert at just that. She not only boldly flaunts her love of color in her handmade wardrobe but shows it off on her IG where you can actually feel her self-love. Really, head to her account and watch her dance like no one is watching or pose like she’s a supermodel while she’s chomping on a head of lettuce or sprouting jazz hands with a storage facility as her backdrop.

Tune in to today’s episode to hear Katie and I chat about discovering and embracing your style, dealing with criticism, inspiration, motherhood and how to be an example of self-love for your children and her mother’s mantra, “Weird is different and different is good.”
